SUNABEDA
Introduction

Sunabeda is named after the main village that is surrounded by an area of 600sq kms of Mixed Deciduous Forest and Bamboo Brakes along with about 42 springs and more than a dozen waterfalls that comprise the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in Western Orissa’s Nuapada district sharing common boundary with the adjoining state of Chhattisgarh. To its north is the Maraguda Valley adjoining a huge Reservoir called- Patora where winter birds from Siberia come between November end t February. Species of ducks and other wetland birds are a delightful sight here. The numerous waterfalls inside is one of the best places to camp though the more creature comfort looking tourists have huge and spacious Forest Bungalows with state of the art technology (concealed solar lighted ceilings that is not expected in this extremely remote plateau where normal electricity has not made a foray yet!)
WATERFALLS:
Beniadhus of about 79ft is only 17kms from the Forest Bungalow at Sunabeda.
PROJECT TIGER: It has the 2nd largest population of Tigers in Orissa after Similipal and given the relative smallness of the area; Tiger sightings are more conspicuous here. Recently this year this nature haven has been declared as PROJECT TIGER.  There are about 32 Tigers and 36 Leopards that are frequently sighted in Kholibhitar, Jalmorie, Cherichuan and Gadagada blocks of the sanctuary. The natural terrain is a fascinating mix of high hills, cliffs, precipices, gushing streams and gurgling waterfalls some of them are so tall that they make no sound at their fall; instead a spray of mist and tiny water droplets greet the intrepid traveler.
