KERALA:
POOVAR BEACH– KOVALAM
Introduction
130 km from Calcutta, 82 km from Diamond Harbour
and 25 km from Namkhana, Bakkhali is the second
best sea resort of West Bengal. On the shores of
Bay of Bengal, shaded by casurina plantations and
bathed by sweet sun rays, she is pretty. Her soothing
calm and peace have attracted tourists from all
over Bengal. But, had the Govt been a bit more careful,
she could be No 1 sea resort in West Bengal-an ideal
place to spend your weekend. Now, sea-bathing is
not much enjoyed, as the beach is clayey and punctuated
by stumps of trees. You may walk 2 km down the beach
to Fraserganj and even take a bus to Namkhana from
there.
Andrew Fraser, the then Deputy Governor of Bengal,
had fallen in love with Narayantala-an island, whose
dimensions are 15x5 Sq km only. Gradually, by his
innovative spirit, it turned into a health resort
and sea resort. Shops were constructed, coconut
plantation done to beautify the island and thus
was created Fraserganj. Alas, nothing of thoses
coconut trees or shops survived but still you would
find the beach more romantic. You may have the fun
of wave-riding on a motor launch or make a trip
by motor launch, of course, to Jamhudwip. The blue
heavens and the blue sea waters have embraced eath
other here at Jambudwip and her still beauty is
only punctuated by the fisher-men, drying out their
nets. But, to stay at Fraserganj is no more possible,
and you have to return to Bakkhali.
